In 2009, Dame Ellen MacArthur made the decision to leave her professional sailing career and embark on a four-year journey around the globe, studying the issues of our current global economy and the need for a regenerative circular one. She founded the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, to help promote a transition to the new system, and served as Vice-Chair of the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Meta-Council and on the European Commission’s Resource Efficiency Platform between 2012 and 2014. For her efforts, she was awarded the French Legion of Honour, and is a Patron of the Big Bang Fair – the UK’s largest celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths for young people.
