Daniel Finkelstein began his career as the Chair of the Young Social Democrats, which eventually merged with the Conservative Party. After serving as the director of a prominent Westminster think tank, focussing on social policy, he became advisor to John Major, former prime minister and then later to the former Conservative leader William Hague. In 1997 Finkelstein was honoured with the Order of the British Empire (OBE). He joined The Times in 2001 and progressed to become Executive Editor. In 2013 Finkelstein was appointed to the House of Lords in recognition of his achievements and contributions. Since 2018 he is chairman of the think-tank Onward, whose mission is to renew the centre right for future generations. Finkelstein now frequently shares his insights on current affairs through regular appearances on TV and radio programs as well as continues to contribute as a columnist for the Times.
