Leading Economist and Former Finance Minister of Greece
Yanis Varoufakis is an economist, academic, author, philosopher and politician. He is best known as the Left wing former Greek minister of finance who led negotiations with the EU to during the economic crisis of 2010.
He describes himself as a "libertarian Marxist"
Varoufakis teaches economic theory at the University of Athens, where he challenges mainstream notions, arguing that after the financial crash of 2008 we need a radically new way of thinking about the economy, finance and capitalism. He was inspired to study economics after he met Andreas Papandreou, Greece’s first socialist Prime Minister. After training in mathematics and statistics, he received his PhD in economics in 1987 at the University of Essex. From January 2004 to December 2006 he was an advisor to Papandreou’s government. In 2015, the International University College of Turin awarded him an Honorary Professorship in Comparative Law Economics and Finance for his extraordinary theoretical contribution to the understanding of the global economic crisis.
