Misha Glenny gained recognition in the 1990s for his reporting on the Yugoslav wars and received the Sony Gold Award from the BBC in 1993 for his "outstanding contributions to broadcasting". He advised the US and several southern European governments on policy matters. He produced the BBC 1 drama series "McMafia," based on his book and the BBC Radio 4 series and podcast "How to Invent a Country," which was published as an audiobook in 2021. In 2022, he presented "The Scramble for Rare Earths" on BBC Radio 4 which examines geopolitical tensions over limited metals and raw materials.
