Former Home Secretary
Alan Johnson served in the Blair and Brown governments as Work and Pensions Secretary, Trade and Industry Secretary, Education Secretary, Health Secretary and Home Secretary.
"Alan Johnson became the youngest General Secretary in the history of the UCW when he was elected in 1992."
Alan Johnson’s remarkable journey began by leaving school at 15 to join the Labour Party in 1971. Rising through the ranks, he became General Secretary of the Communication Workers Union after several strategic mergers. Beyond his union work, he showcased his diverse talents as a Director of Unity Trust Bank plc and a member of Ruskin College Oxford’s Governing Council.
The political arena beckoned, and Johnson heeded the call. His political career saw him as Minister of State for Employment Relations, expanding to industries, and later as Secretary of State for Work and Pensions and education. He remained a dedicated Member of Parliament for Hull West and Hessle since 1997.
Alan Johnson is a bold and relevant speaker, unafraid to express controversial views. As a dedicated moderniser, he effectively manages the government’s union connections, making him highly suited for the current economic and political climate.
