Former Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs
Carl Bildt is Co-Chair of the European Council of Foreign Relations, contributing columnist to the Washington Post and the Project Syndicate. Previously, he has held positions both as Sweden’s Prime Minister and as Foreign Affairs Minister. Since 2021, he has been serving as the World Health Organization’s Special Envoy for the Access to COVID-19 Tools.
"Peace is not just the absence of conflict, but the presence of justice, stability, and respect for human rights."
Carl Bildt received international acclaim as the key mediator in the Balkans conflict and served as the UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy for the Balkans between 1999 and 2001. As Sweden’s Prime Minister from 1991 to 1994, he successfully negotiated Sweden’s entry into the European Union. After his return as Sweden’s Foreign Minister from 2006 to 2014, he then chaired the Global Commission on Internet Governance for two years. A holder of various international honours and decorations, Carl Bildt serves on several advisory boards including the Anti-Corruption Foundation (ACF), Centre for European Reform and RAND Europe.
Noted internationally for his activities in resolving the Balkan conflict, as a visionary of Europe and an expert on world affairs, Carl Bildt came of age as a thinker at a time when politicians and intellectuals sought refuge from war in the power of international organisations. He offers insights into leadership in adverse situations and shows how to successfully negotiate at the highest level.
