Iain Duncan Smith was Member of Parliament for Chingford in 1992 and was re-elected in 1997. He joined William Hague’s Shadow Cabinet in 1997, initially as Shadow Secretary of State for Social Security and later as Shadow Secretary of State for Defence. Iain became the Leader of the Conservative Party in 2001. After stepping down in 2003, he founded the CSJ, an independent think tank focusing on poverty and social issues. Following the 2010 General Election, he became the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions until March 2016. In this role, Iain led major welfare reforms, including Universal Credit, the Work Programme uniting sectors to aid unemployed people back to work and the streamlined Single Tier Pension. He continues to represent Chingford and Woodford Green in Parliament and became a pivotal politician throughout the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union. He received a knighthood in 2020 for his political and public service.
