Simonyi Chair for the Public Understanding of Science
Marcus du Sautoy is Professor of Mathematics at the University of Oxford where he holds the prestigious Simonyi Chair for the Public Understanding of Science and is a Fellow of New College. Du Sautoy has received a number of awards for his work including the London Mathematical Society’s Berwick Prize for outstanding mathematical research.
"One of the world’s leading scientists"
His mathematical research has covered a great many areas including group theory, number theory and model theory, but he has been equally successful in his promotion of mathematics to the general public. He has written and presented several series for radio including 5 Shapes for BBC Radio 4 and Maths and Music for the Essay on BBC Radio 3. He presented the television programme, Mind Games, on BBC Four and most recently he has presented the BBC series "The Code". In 2009 Prof. Sautoy won the Michael Faraday Prize from the Royal Society of London for "excellence in communicating science to UK audiences".
Prof. Sautoy offers audiences insights into the science of cryptography and how maths is in effect the science of pattern searching and a powerful tool to help predict what’s likely to happen in the future. A natural communicator, he is especially passionate when it comes to popularising maths – showing how it affects every aspect of our lives from simple counting to any form of trade and even the homes in which we live.
